Montserrat College of Art would like to welcome the public to an artist lecture by internationally renowned Kenyan-born, New York-based artist and activist Wangechi Mutu on Thursday, May 14 at 6 p.m. at The Cabot Theatre, 286 Cabot Street, Beverly. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Mutu has been called the most important African artist today. She is also the keynote commencement speaker and honorary doctoral recipient at Montserrat’s graduation ceremonies the following day. The lecture is free but registration is requested by contacting Margaret.Waugh@montserrat.edu.

“We are extremely honored to have an artist of Ms. Mutu’s caliber speaking to our community,” said Stephen D. Immerman, president of Montserrat College of Art. “Her successful career both in the US and abroad will be inspirational to our community. We are excited to welcome her to the campus and to the North Shore.” Mutu joins a long list of illustrious commencement speakers at Montserrat including Bryan Konietzko, Gregory Crewdson, Amy Sillman, Jenny Holzer, Janine Antoni and James Rosenquist, to name a few. 

Mutu is the recipient of the United States Artist Grant (2014), the Brooklyn Museum’s Artist of the Year Award (2013), and was honored as Deutsche Bank’s first Artist of the Year (2010). She received an MFA from Yale and BFA from Cooper Union.She will be just returning to the US from her appearance at the Venice Biennale. See Mutu’s work at wangechimutu.com.

For the third year in a row The House of Seven Gables will allow Salem Arts members on the grounds of their property during their normal hours of operation of 10 am to 5 pm daily to sketch, paint, photograph, and write without the need to pay entrance admission between Saturday May 16 and Saturday May 30, 2015.

Tuesday April 7 from 6-8pm come celebrate the community-service initiative and art program with Salem's elementary school students.  There will be a reception, exhibition, and auction.  Admission is one unexpired can of food or other nonperishable food item per person.  More information can be found at PEM.org.

Are you an artist who likes to perform, display and/or sell your work, or lead an art-making activity? The annual Salem Arts Festival (June 5-7, 2015) is your chance! The call for artist deadline is April 10, 2015.  Participation information is available online. 

For 50 years, the Marblehead Festival of Arts, a year-round all-volunteer organization, has produced a summer arts Festival over the July 4th holiday.

This year's festival promises to be outstanding, a days-long free event comprising art exhibits, performances, a logo contest, a culinary arts reception, a street festival, and more. The call for art is located on their Art exhibits page. 

Check out their webpage for special events being planned for the 50th Festival Celebration, which will run concurrently with the festival, July 2–5, 2015.

The Winthrop Art Association 2015 Festival and Craft Fair will be held from April 24th - 26th at the EB Newton Cultural Center, Winthrop, MA. They are seeking artists to enter the Festival with original art works and crafters for the Craft Fair. Hello Artists or Friends of Artists,

 The Brush Art Gallery and Studios is asking artists who have had an affiliation with us to participate in a fun project that will help us raise money for our art scholarship program.

We are having our 4th annual Four By Four For Education fundraiser for our University of Lowell Art Scholarship Program on April 11.  This fundraiser will feature 150 - 200 little 4"x4" works of original art.  These canvases will be displayed in our gallery beginning March 7 and sold the day of the fundraiser. The money raised from sales will go to the program which awards a scholarship to a deserving student majoring in the visual arts. 

We are asking our affiliated artists if they would like to participate. We will provide you with a 4 inch by 4 inch canvas. We invite you to create whatever you wish with whatever media and materials you like.  If you need to remove the canvas from its frame and replace it with fabric, metal, paper, glass, etc., please do so.  The only restrictions are:

1. you use the canvas we provide;
2. the outer dimensions of the finished work not exceed 4 x 4. 

Because this is a fundraiser, we really regret that we cannot compensate you for your labor, but invite you to attend the fundraiser as our guest.

The deadline for completion of your canvas is Feb 28.
