We’re very proud to announce that two of Salem’s most energetic cultural organizations will join forces to honor film and art in the official public kick-off to SFF 2019. Meet visiting filmmakers, VIPs, friends old and new for lite nibbles supplied by Three Kitchens Catering and drinks hosted by North Shore Bartending.

Salem Film Fest 2019 Kick Off Party at Salem Arts Association

Join us 5:30-7:30pm at the galleries.

Salem Arts will also sponsor New England debut of the film “The End of Fear” that will be presented on Saturday March 30 at 1:00 PM at the PEM Morse Auditorium.

Barnett Newman’s trailblazing abstract expressionist painting, Who’s Afraid of Red, Yellow and Blue III, has been controversial since it burst onto the art scene in 1967, raising questions, triggering emotions and provoking reactions. From the moment the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam acquired the large and primarily monochrome red painting in 1969, the museum has had to justify its purchase to those questioning its economic, artistic and social value.

THE END OF FEAR  chronicles the 1986 brutal knife attack on the piece and the aftermath of its unconventional and contentious restoration. After lawsuits, settlements, gag orders and further restoration, the resurrected abstract icon is again on display in Amsterdam, raising the same questions it did at its 1967 début: What is the possible value of art? What makes something a work of art? Who decides this? What does it mean? And who is (still) afraid of red, yellow and blue?

Salon des Refuses

In 1863 the most prestigious exhibition in Paris, the Paris Salon, rejected art work in the new Impressionist style.  Manet, Courbet, Whistler and Pissaro were among the rejected artists.  In protest they exhibited their work in their own exhibit, the now famous "Salon des Refuses," which brought their beautiful and innovative work to the public - and made them famous.

In recognition of the fact that a lot of wonderful work doesn't get accepted into art exhibits we are holding our own "Salon Des Refuses."
