HAITIAN ART EXHIBIT AT KENSINGTON-STOBART GALLERY. Ongoing through early November, 2008 –Kensington-Stobart Gallery continues to celebrate October in Salem by taking a giant departure to the unpredictable. For the first time ever, the Gallery is exhibiting a collection of imported Haitian art. Symbolic paintings and metal sculptures adorn the gallery walls, and elaborate sequined flags used in Haitian ceremonies hang proudly in the windows.

A five-foot tall hand-made figure stands in the window, ready to greet visitors and passers-by.

The untitled acrylic paintings are the creation of Payas (born Pierre Sylvain Augustin); he was one of "the 13 New St. Soleil artists" presented at the French Institute in Haiti, and he has also exhibited in the World Bank in Washington, DC.

Known for his expertly crafted outlined images, flag-maker Yves Thelemaque began identifying his flags by adding in sequins "YT." His work is bold and clear, defined and sharp. The sometimes-formulaic interior is mitigated by the extraordinary work holding the piece together.

Metal sculpturist Serge Jolimeau became interested in serrated metal, closely observing the blacksmiths in his neighborhood when he was a child. At age 20 he opened his own workshop and began teaching others his craft. He has exhibited in the United States, as well as in Mexico, France and Germany.
