Artist Bio or Résumé
Artist Bio: Laurie Brooks
My love affair with photography started at an early age when receiving a Polaroid Instamatic
Camera for a birthday gift. I immediately enjoyed photographing the world around me. After
studying and graduating from Boston University Center for Digital Imaging Arts, I immediately
began working as a photographer capturing portraits, weddings, and nature.
Later, my interest in photography and art was inspired by the 17th century
floral still life paintings of the Dutch Masters. This fascination has led me to capture the beauty
of flowers. I have advanced my photography skills by enrolling in classes taught by Kathleen
Clemons. After attending her Maine Workshop, I quickly started implementing those learnings
to create gorgeous floral images. I strive to bring the brilliance and amazement of nature’s
creations to my images. I often look to my own backyard and use New England’s landscapes
and native flowers for such inspiration.
My latest endeavor includes seascape oil paintings on canvas. Again, I look to the artists of
the Impressionism era for inspiration. As the Masters of Impressionism did with their work,
I aim to evoke the emotions of serenity and the amazement of nature. While obtaining a
Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Art Studies from the University of Massachusetts, I
enjoyed studying the techniques and processes of the Impressionist painters and how they
expressed their vision of the world.
I have furthered my studies in oil painting by enrolling into classes taught by local New
England artists at the Featherstone Center for the Arts on Martha’s Vineyard. My paintings have
taken on an ethereal and dreamy composition. This summer I entered my paintings in the
Island’s “All Island Art Show” and was awarded 2nd prize and awarded 1st prize in the
Island’s annual Agricultural Fair. As I am just at the beginning of my journey, I am always
looking for more opportunities to learn about my craft. As a lifelong student, I plan to
continue my education in the areas of photography and painting.
I hope you experience a sense of serenity, peace, and enlightenment as you look at my
work. I look forward to creating even more work in the future.
