During the 2018 Spring Semester, community instructors will lead 90-minute mini courses for 10 weeks at Collins Middle School (29 Highland Ave, Salem). We had a very successful first semester that culminated in a fun and inspiring Showcase that included judging from Mayor Driscoll, Representative Tucker and Superintedent Ruiz. We were very excited with the outcome of the first Expanding Horizons.
There are three curricula to choose from, but I am sending the Art description as I feel that is what you would be most interested in:
Art – Salem is a thriving and vibrant city filled with art in many forms – painted utility boxes, murals on downtown buildings, and public art installments like plastic bag jellyfish. Many students chose Art and we are scheduling 7 classes, with 15-20 students in each class. We will need 7 lead teachers and 7 assistant teachers. The lead teacher must have some experience in visual art and the assistant teachers just need an interest in art. All teachers must be excited about teaching young minds. LEAP will be developing the curriculum and it will be largely a visual arts (painting, drawing, designing collages, printmaking, etc) curriculum. We will do local field trips, bring in local artists and collaborate with the Salem Arts community. The session will culminate in a presentation of their art at the LEAP Elective Showcase, where students’ favorite pieces will be exhibited around a common theme.
This opportunity is great for anyone who enjoys working with students and would like to give back to the community. Not interested in leading one of these classes, but would consider assisting? Let us know! The more mentors the better in a middle school class!
Program objectives: Help students build their 21st century skills, make college and career connections, and develop positive relationships with adults.
Mondays and/or Wednesdays 2:00-3:30PM
Classes will meet February 26th – May 17th with a final Showcase on Thursday, May 24th
Lead the class that interests you! Use curriculum and lesson plans already developed by LEAP staff. Planning support and classroom management support to be provided by LEAP staff and school day staff and paraprofessionals. LEAP will arrange guest speakers and field trips that align with the three themes of the class. LEAP will provide all supplies within the budget.
